Blog Tour: Out of Reach by Missy Johnson

Title: Out of Reach
Author: Missy Johnson
Release Date: May 8, 2014

My best friend was dying and I was in love with his girl.

Andy and I had been best friends since we were eight-years old.

Watching him slowly fade away, ever closer to his final breath, made me so incredibly angry. I knew there was nothing I could do to change it--I had given in to despair, but Andy had not. He had one last hand to play.

He wasn't going to simply sit back and wait for Death to claim him--not Andy. He was going to live life until he couldn't hold his eyes open any longer.

Andy didn't want to die in some sterile hospital and asked me to take him and Emily to the beach. It would be our last road trip together.

Emily. Emily was a problem for me.

I harbored a secret that would have torn our friendship apart. I was in love with Andy's girl, and had been since she'd walked into our sixth grade class, so many years ago.

So what kind of person am I? My best friend is dying, and it's awful--but my heart still aches for his girl. I hate myself for thinking beyond Andy's death and whether there could ever be a future for Emily and I, but I can't help it.

I'm in love with her.

Release Day Blitz and Giveaway: Strings of the Heart by Katie Ashley

Title: Strings of the Heart
Author: Katie Ashley
Expected Release: May 12th

~ Synopsis ~

Twenty year old, Allison Slater has been in love with her brother’s bandmate, Rhys McGowan, since she was fifteen years old. But to him, she’ll always be Jake’s little sister and off limits. Now a college sophomore and licking her wounds from a bad breakup, she sets her sights on making Rhys see her as someone he could date…maybe even love. Her opportunity comes when Rhys visits his parents in Savannah where she is attending college. But the night she’s dreamed of turns to heart-break, and she realizes she’ll never be the one for Rhys.

For Rhys McGowan, his nightmare began when he woke up, naked and hung-over, next to his bandmate’s little sister. Unable to remember a thing from the previous night, he only makes matters worse by lying to Allison about not being interested in her. The truth is he’s spent the last year to ignore his body’s reaction whenever Allison is around. His resolve is tested when Allison comes on tour with Runaway Train, as both Jake and Abby’s nanny and to fulfill her fashion design internship. The more time he spends with her in the close quarters of the bus, the harder it is for him to resist.

Will Rhys realize that having a relationship with Allison is worth fighting for even if it means that he has to fight his best friend for a chance?

~ Excerpt ~

“Take a shot,” he commanded, his expression tense, his eyes unreadable.

Goosebumps pebbled my arms at his assertiveness. I wasn’t used to him being so forceful. For a moment, I couldn’t process his words. It was like the tone of the entire conversation had veered off course. Reluctantly, I followed his orders. When I started to reach for a lime, he stopped me. As I eyed him curiously, he took the shaker of salt in his hand. Tilting his head, he shook the bottle along his neck. Then he leaned over and brought the shaker to my neck. My chest rose and fell in harsh pants at the nearness of him. But most of all, it was the way the tension crackled in the air between us. Nothing really had been spoken out-loud, nothing had been done to change things, but in that moment, everything was different.

“Take a shot,” he repeated.

With trembling fingers, I reached for the glass. I took it in one hand and the lime in the other. Leaning forward on the stool, I dipped my head down to his neck. My lips hovered over the warmth of his skin. Flicking out my tongue, I brought it against the stubble on his neck. Rhys sucked in a harsh breath at the contact. Slowly, my tongue trailed upwards over the faint line of salt, eliciting a small groan from Rhys.

Once I finished, I pulled away. I didn’t dare look at Rhys—my skin burned just from the intensity of the stare I felt on me. Tipping up the glass, I downed it in one fiery gulp. As my eyes pinched shut in pain, I slammed the lime against my lips. My teeth cut through the fruit, as my mouth sucked off the juices. When I swallowed again, a shiver echoed through me.

I opened my eyes to find Rhys still staring at me. His dark eyes shone with an intensity that I would’ve given anything to know what he was thinking. He reached for his glass and lime. His eyes never left mine as he bent over. I tilted my head to give him better access. At the feel of his warm tongue on my neck, I shuddered, and I remained trembling even after he pulled away. He then downed the tequila without even bothering with the lime.

“Another?”

“Yes.”

We repeated the process again. And again. Until we had downed five shots and licked and sucked our way up each other’s necks. My skin still tingled from the feel of his tongue. Of course, my entire body was tingling from the strong alcohol pumping through every cell and molecule. It made me feel so alive. While it had just been his tongue on my neck, the feel of his hands as they brushed on my shoulders, whispered across my collarbone, had driven me crazy. I could only fantasize that his tongue was following the same path across my chest and down to my breasts.

More than anything in the world, I wanted this man, and tonight I was going to get my wish. From the lust-filled looks he been giving me, along with the groans of pleasure when I had licked his skin, I knew what was going to happen. I was finally going to have Rhys.

“I wish I were there wearing your clothes right now.” He laughed. “That’s what you want to be doing? Because I’d like to be fucking you if you were here.” “Well, that too. But then I’d put on your shirt.” “You like that, don’t you?” “I know you do too,” she said. “I do. Seeing you in my shirt and your heels is my kryptonite.” “Oh, is that it? That’s your kryptonite?” “Or maybe it’s just that you are,” he whispered, admitting more than he wanted to. “I think the same could be said here.” There was a pause, and though they were three thousand miles apart, the silence was heady. He was in a drugged-out state tonight. This woman was his pill, and closeness with her was what he craved most even as he feared she would destroy his heart. Smash it to a million tiny pieces and eat it for lunch. But he had a built-in barrier in distance, and with no trips to San Francisco on his immediate calendar he saw nothing wrong with this temporary moment of relief from the pressure inside of him from wanting her. They couldn’t be together in any meaningful way, and he couldn’t get hurt if he didn’t actually see her. Right? Right, he answered for himself. “What are we doing, Julia?” he asked, and he was sure she could hear the longing in his tone, but he didn’t care. There was no need to hide it after they’d just broken down and pleasured themselves together. “I wish I knew,” she said, her voice wistful and full of yearning. “I really wish I knew.” He heaved a sigh, trying to sort out his thoughts, but his brain was a mixed-up mess and he didn’t know how to untangle all the threads. Or if he wanted to remain tangled up with her instead. “What are you going to do when we hang up?” he asked, changing direction. “Read a book.” “What are you reading these days?” “A crazy story about a guy who treks across Antarctica.” “That does sound crazy.” “Yeah. He’s kind of hallucinating and talking to penguins right now,” she said with a small laugh. “Can you blame him? I have to imagine if you’re stuck in the polar ice cap that talking to penguins might be a rare source of comfort.” “As long as he doesn’t eat the penguins I’ll keep reading it.” “Here’s to no penguin meals in the books we read.” “What will you do?” “I suspect I will fall fast asleep and dream of a beautiful redhead on the other side of the country.” “She would like that dream very much,” she said in a sweet voice, the kind that worked its way beneath all the hard edges in him, and settled deep in his heart. “Will I talk to you again soon?” He took a fueling breath, and put his armor back on, steeling himself. “I don’t know the answer to that.”

~ Our Review ~
3.5 Stars by Guest Reviewer Cybill

Great conclusion to a good series.

Autumn and Hunter are back and we get a look inside the dynamics of there relationship. We see them grow into a couple and battle everyday problems. We see them grow into a more mature couple. The author did good with further character development. We get to see inside their pasts and view the families they came from.

Autumn is still very naive and immature in all things relationship related. She is struggling to underrstand the way things work with a beast of man with a penchant for hard, rough sex. She is still battling her inner demons from being teased and tormented all the way through high school. In the first book, I thought her family was supportive of her even though they were poor. But Autumn Mom is very sick and her dad is not supportive.

Hunter gets is brother back, which was the purpose in the first book. Jessie is a good guy. Both boys are messed up from things there mother did. Jessie struggles to find a job and Hunter is still struggling with a learning disability that makes his college career a constant struggle. Both Bane brothers will do whatever it takes to survive.

Hunter is hard, he is demanding and kind of thuggish. He has anger issues, is controlling but yet completely hot. He claims what is his and makes no qualms about taking what he wants when he wants it.

There are bumps and struggles along the way but these two find ways to always work it out and deal with whatever life deems to throw at them. They fight and forgive, they love and last. A great ending for Hunter and Leafy.

(This excerpt is unedited)

I’m walking home from school, wandering across the streets as I stare at the beautiful houses. Peeking into their living rooms, I can clearly see the candle flames dancing, flickering through the window like a warm, inviting light. People walking in the rooms are oblivious of me, which gives me all the more reason to keep looking. Their happy faces make me smile, if only for a second. Catching a glimpse of a normal life lets me escape from reality.

Envy unfurls in my stomach, and a bad taste enters my mouth as I spit on the ground and walk further. Up to the next house. Up to the next short moment of carelessness.

Reaching my house is the last thing I want, but I know it’ll happen eventually. I’ll have to go home. I always have to. There’s nowhere else I can go, and my brother needs me. Not as much as I need him, though. I probably wouldn’t even be alive without him.

No one at my age should be going through this. No one should be picking up their mom from the grass every morning. No kid should have to drag his mom to bed. No kid should have to raise himself.

My home is a broken one. When I spot it, a heavy feeling overcomes me. Each step I take leads to another day in hell.

The garden is littered with used needles, empty bottles of liquor, and old condoms. Me and my brother never have time to clean it all up. We’re too busy trying to keep the house clean enough to live in.

As I enter the house a familiar, but disgusting stench causes me to cough. All the windows are closed, smoke wafts through the air, bottles are scattered on the table, and an empty bag of white powder is in my mother’s hand as she hangs like a wet rag in her seat. Ash grey hair sticks to her face, masking her eyes. Her head is on the table, and she’s snoring loudly. The only thing keeping her in place is her bony ass stuck to that chair she only leaves to get some more. More of whatever she needs to satisfy her addictions.

“Hey, bro,” Jessie says. He’s unwinding the vacuum plug, turning it on at the same time.

“Hey …” I say.

“Sorry, thought I’d have it cleaned up by now, but it was too much of a mess.”

“Don’t apologize,” I say. “It’s not your fault.”

He smiles briefly. “I know. I just don’t want you to see it.”

A moment of silence passes between us, the air thick with unspoken words. I owe my brother so much. He’s the only one taking care of both of us right now. I wonder how long we’ll last if she keeps this up.

I start unpacking my things, shoving my mother aside from the table so I have enough room to check what I need to do. My notebook is filled to the brim with short texts of things I need to remember. My memory always fails me, especially when it comes to short term things like homework or names. It’s been like this for as long as I can remember. My brother thinks it’s because of my mother. We don’t know her any other way than she is now. Drunk. Addicted. Full on drugs.

Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl. Sometimes I really hate her, but she’s my mother too. I owe her for keeping us alive, for trying to do her best to give us a home.

Somewhere along the way she failed. I can’t not resent her for that. At times I wonder if she ever intended on having us or if we were accidents she regrets.

It doesn’t change anything about our situation. It doesn’t change anything about the fact that it’s her fault I have a learning disability and my brother has ADD.

One of the notes slips from my book, and it lands on her arm. The paper immediately stains with blood. Sighing, I pick up the piece of paper and notice the puncture marks on her skin. She looks more like an orange than a human sometimes, that’s how many holes she shot into herself. So many it doesn’t stop bleeding. Still, it doesn’t make her quit.

Suddenly, she grabs my hand, and I’m startled by her movement. I jolt up and pull my hand back as her head shoots up from the table. Her eyes are bloodshot, staring back at me with a crazy look like she doesn’t know who I am. It takes her a few seconds to register that it’s me, and then a smile slowly creeps onto her face, exposing her black, broken teeth and smelly breath.

“Hunter …” she mumbles.

Her hand drops off the table, the bag of powder tumbling to the floor. The sound immediately catches her attention, as if it’s food for a starving woman. Bending to pick it up, her fingers tremble as she reaches for the bag.

“Shit. It’s empty again.”

“You used too much again,” I add.

“No, no, no, this can’t happen,” she mumbles, clearly still under the influence.

“Mom. Calm down. You can go without it for a few hours. You won’t die.”

“No, I can’t!” she gets up from her seat, barely able to stand as her legs are two thin sticks ready to snap.

“I’m going to get more,” she stammers, grabbing me by the coat.

“Let go of me,” I say.

“You can’t stay here alone with your brother.”

“Why not?”

“Because …” she sniffs. “I need you. I can’t do this without you.” She wipes away the tears filling her eyes. She, most of us all, is unable to face the monster she’s become.

“No, mom. I’m not coming with you. I’m not going to be your busboy again. Not anymore.”

“What? You don’t mean that. You know I need you. Please don’t let me go through this alone.” She tightens her grip on my arm, dragging me to the door. Resisting is what I should be doing, but I don’t want to hurt her. She’s been hurt enough in her life.

“Stop,” Jessie shouts. He stops vacuuming, turning it off. His fists are balled, his nostrils flaring, and his stance is aggressive, as if he’s about to attack my mother. I know he would if it was necessary.

“Let. Him. Go.” His teeth barely separate as he speaks the words. His furrowed brows even scare me.

Her fingers untangle themselves from my arm, and I shake myself loose from her grip. I turn away from her, slanting to the side because I’m scared she might grab me again and make a run for it. My brother is and always will be the only thing keeping her from ruining not only herself but me, too.

“Fine, but I’m going,” she says, and after making a horrible face she walks out the door. The slam that follows force the tears to spring from my eyes.

~ Excerpt ~

Preface Twelve days until freedom. Well, not exactly complete freedom, but more than I currently have living in the same home and city as my father, the all powerful scary mob boss of Chicago, Toni Gallo. The sooner I can get out from under his thumb and watchful eye the better. Don't get me wrong, I love my father and understand his reasons for being overprotective when it comes to my safety and well being, but understanding it does not make it easier to handle. Between losing my mother to cancer when she was only thirty-four and being the principessa to one of the top mafia crime bosses in the Chicago area, my pops is scared to death of losing me to both natural and un-natural causes. There are not many things that scare my dad. He is used to taking what he wants and controlling all those around him as if he is playing a game of chess, but I am the last family he has left, and the apple of his eye. He has always been overprotective and cautious when it comes to my welfare. It has been hard growing up surrounded by security detail and having my every move tracked, but I understand his fears. I swear if he could lock me in my room for the rest of my days he would do it. In all reality he is less strict then most father's in his position of power. I met another principessa named Gloria at an Italian gathering my father made me attend around two years ago. The poor girl seemed lost and so unhappy, not that her family gave a shit. She was not allowed to make her own decisions and even her future husband would one day be chosen by her father. My dad might be many things, but unlike others around him, he respects me as a person and does not try to hold me back. For the last four years I have been plotting my escape with an acceptance to college. My one chance to get away and experience something that resembles a normal life. One that does not involve police raids, sketchy business dealings at all hours of the night, and friends that try and befriend me out of fear and intrigue instead of true friendship. On my sixteenth birthday I made a pact with my dad. As long as I kept my grades up, stayed out of trouble, and graduated at the top of my class than he would allow me to leave Chicago and go off to the college of my choice. I would get a chance to live in the dorms anonymously without his best men tracking my every move. I would get to be normal in a city that would not jump with fear and awe at the mere mention of my last name. Hell, I am nineteen years old and have yet to have a normal date because all the boys were afraid to ask me out due to my father's wrath. Jimmy Evans was my only boyfriend in high school and after my father found out through one of his trusty men that Jimmy and I were having sex; my father threatened his life and swore to tear his balls off and feed them to him if he ever broke my heart. Two weeks later Jimmy and his family moved away and I never heard from him again. What kind of life is that? I feel trapped. If I don't get out soon I am afraid I will awake one day and no longer recognize the carefree happy girl I once was. Seeing death, drugs, and even torture on a daily basis can do that to a person. After keeping up my end of the bargain my dad has reluctantly kept his and in twelve days I will be leaving this life and beginning my new one at the Rice University in Houston, Texas. A who new life where I can be Karma Gallo, college student and carefree teenager, instead of Karma Gallo, daughter of renowned mob boss and weapons dealer. In twelve days my life will finally begin.

Ghosts and vampires were always her favorite beings to write about and those interests led to her debut novella Fractured Legacy in 2013. With Bound and Unbroken, her characters led her on a departure from the paranormal world and into the realm of BDSM romance. When she isn’t spending time with the voices in her head, she works to help other women design their own style of freedom as a consultant for Jamberry Nails, and spends time with her Husband and ferrets.
