Cover Reveal: Desires by RJ Van Cleave

~ Synopsis ~

Bree MacLane loved designing clothes. It was far more rewarding than farming. Through her sister-in-law, Cassie, Bree caught the eye of the famed designer, Ethan Alexander, at the age of seventeen. Cassie had the connections, but Bree’s raw talent paved the way to a life away from Blossom Grove. Los Angeles called, and nothing could keep Bree tied to her tiny hometown. Not even Gavin Baker, or the mistake they made one summer night.  Burying that night allowed her to move on, but losing Gavin hurt her more than she realized.
Gavin Baker lusted over Bree MacLane for longer than he cared to admit. Their five-year age gap prevented him from acting on those feelings – until she turned eighteen and told him she wanted him too. One night with her, and he was ready to make it forever. He had plans to lay down roots with Bree, only what Gavin had to offer wasn't enough for her. Loving Bree from afar became a way of life for him again because living without her wasn’t an option.
Five years after leaving Blossom Grove, a family emergency brings Bree home. Unprepared for a baby mama and an unexpected death she heads into a downward spiral. Forced to face the painful secret from her past, Bree realizes she may have lost the future that she didn’t know she wanted. But the four meddling MacLane wives and a few therapy horses help Gavin prove to Bree they still have a future. They show her that there’s more to Gavin, to herself, and to Blossom Grove, than she ever realized. Sometimes, the desires of your heart steer you away from true happiness, but the right person will lead you back.

~ Author Bio ~

R.J. Van Cleave grew up in a small town near San Diego, CA, where she still lives today. She loved science as a child and had planned on becoming a doctor. However, she realized she wanted to be a mother more, and switched to working in the Biotech industry. One daughter was eventually joined by fraternal twin sisters (a surprise), and R.J.’s life was complete. In 2011, her mom died from undiagnosed cancer and R.J.’s world was turned upside down. In an attempt to honor her mother’s life, R.J. got a few tattoos and schlepped through a few half marathons. Needles and strenuous exercise were two real fears for R.J., but her greatest fear was actually putting a story in her head down on paper. In June of 2013, R.J. finally conquered that fear when she sat down and wrote Demons, which she self-published on February 14, 2014. The MacLane Family series was born and R.J.’s career as a writer was too.

~ Excerpt ~

The soft strumming of a guitar immediately assaulted my senses, but that wasn’t what made the hair at the end of my arms stand at attention. I closed my eyes needing to check my emotions and the thoughts that attacked my mind at rapid speed.
One right after the other.
They were disastrous and unforgiving.
The strumming of the guitar was effortless and defined. I would recognize it anywhere. No one could play like she could.
No one.
That voice…
It was smooth like silk but raw enough to give you chills.
That song…
Would be a permanent reminder of what I lost.
That night…
Would forever haunt me. My days and nights.
God… I couldn’t think of that night without my cock getting hard and the shame engulfing me almost simultaneously. Metallica’s lyrics of Nothing Else Matters took me back to another time, another place, where I pretended that she was mine…
I was always hers.
Always.
Her face…
Her eyes…
Her body…
I remembered it all, and I hadn’t even looked up to see her. I didn’t have to. She was engrained in my mind. In my heart. In my soul.
She sang the chorus over again with the emotions bleeding off the strings of her guitar and her voice. The guitar solo followed making the crowd scream and cheer for her talent. Her energy was fucking contagious, it always had been. I felt it all around me even though I still hadn’t opened my eyes to take her in. I knew she was biting her fucking lip, it didn’t matter how many damn times I told her she was going to bite it off. I’d memorized the feel of her lips against my mouth the way I’d take that same goddamn lip and bite on it myself.
Wanting a piece of her.
Needing a piece of her.
Her voice dropped to a soft tone, as did her guitar. The song ended and the crowd went even more wild and ravenous for her.
“Well, hello there fucking Nashville!”
They hollered higher and louder. She always knew how to work a crowd.
“Welcome to Bootleggers! Who’s gettin’ fucked up tonight?”
“Yeah!” they shouted.
“Who’s gettin’ fucking laid tonight?”
They shouted again, whistling and clapping that time. I shook my head with a smile I didn’t bother trying to hide.
“That’s what I’m talking about! Down and dirty in the fuckin’ South!” she yelled in the same southern drawl she hated as a child.
“I’m going to take a little break—”
“Booooooo!”
She giggled and my cock twitched.
“I know, darlins’, I’m too fucking pretty to look at. I’ll be back, I promise! In the meantime buy me a fuckin’ shot! My name’s Kid.”
I immediately looked up, right at her. I swear to God my chest seized and she literally took my goddamn breath away. Wearing short daisy dukes and a miniscule shirt that had “Whiskey Makes Me Frisky” written across her breasts. The damn thing looked like it was as old as me. Her entire stomach bare, her belly button now pierced and her long dark hair cascading down her back, almost touching her ass. The tiny frame that I fucking loved was still the same, but she looked grown up. Older. Her legs, her fucking legs. I remembered them wrapped around me and I had to shake my head to erase the images that had my cock hard and my heart heavy.

~ Excerpt ~
I knew something good was coming and I couldn’t tear my gaze away. With his fingers wrapped around the football, Dan glanced up at me in the stands and nodded quickly, the biggest grin on his face. He didn't seem to care that he had about three guys ready to tackle him. The pressure never fazed Dan, because this was his element. The Friday night lights, the roaring crowds, the pigskin in his hands, commanding the field. The dude was a star and I was proud to be his brother. I nodded back and he finally threw the football. It spiraled perfectly through the air, landing straight into Johnson's tight grip, where he ran the short distance and . . .
"Touchdown!" I jumped from the bench and threw my hands in the air, screaming. Except, my cheering was short-lived. I palmed my back and frowned as a sharp pain stabbed me. I glanced over my shoulder, eyeing the crowd behind me. Did someone throw something? No. They were all too engrossed in the game.
Running a hand over my back that ached with a dull pain, I drew my attention back to the field. Maybe I had been sitting too long?
I prepared to ease past Anna and her sister when she touched my arm. "Where you going?"
I stopped in front of her and smiled. My girlfriend was beautiful and that was an understatement. We'd finally made our relationship official two months ago. We were young, but I’d known her since preschool, basically forever. And I was the lucky guy that got to hold her hand.
"Just going to stretch," I told her.
"You're gonna miss the last thirty seconds of the game though.” She cocked her head.
It was safe to say the whole town lived for high school football, and it was no lie that my brother, Dan, was the best quarterback since I didn’t know when.
I glanced over my shoulder at the scoreboard. We were ahead by seven points. I smirked, ready to tell her I wasn’t worried about it, when another weird pain ricocheted around from my back to my side. I flinched. What in the heck?
"You okay?" she asked, steadying her hand on my arm.
I laughed, trying to play it cool, but I honestly wasn't sure what the hell was up. "I'm good. I've been sitting too long I think. I'll be back." I didn't waste another second, slipping past the girls and rushing to the front of the stadium.
I palmed my side and stretched out a little, only to find that made it worse. Putting my hand out, I braced myself against the ticket booth that had already closed. I sucked in a few deep breaths but the ache in my back grew tighter with each inhale. "What the heck?" I yelled, but it was masked by whoops and hollers from the stands.
We won.
A grin tipped my lips even though I was trying not to scowl in pain. I was probably more proud of him than my parents and I had missed the end. This was the sixth game of the season and I had missed the end of the last one because Anna needed a soda. I stood in line as James made the winning touchdown, beating our arch rivals forty-seven to forty.

It seemed like a new trend . . . always missing out on the best part, the end.
