This book was a really sad read.  Lots of tears and a spot where I wanted to give up on the book because I was pissed and hurt.  I'm glad I didn't stopped.

Katie has been through a lot of heartache.  She suffers from mutism.  She shuts down after her life falls apart.  She doesn't want to be alive, but knows this is her punishment. She has her parents, brother and his lifetime best friend Parker to help her.  Well plus her doctor.  She struggles a lot and then she gets something that makes her decide that she can keep living and be happy.  Though she continues to struggle with being happy.   She has always loved Parker, but can she let herself be happy with him?  Will she really be able to move on?

Parker has always loved Katie.  His biggest regret is letting Katie go.  After the accident that took everything from her he makes it his mission to help her come back to life. He wants to right his wrongs.  Though when the past comes out can he live with it?  Or will he self destruct?

This book really took a twist I wasn't expecting.  I usually avoid these books.
I have to say that this book was really good and there was a certain part that killed me inside and I almost stopped reading.  In a way I wish I would have.  I hate to say that, but it is one of those books that even though you know how it ends you wish you could change it.  Though I can't help, but also be happy with the ending and how everything worked out.

~ Excerpt ~

“I know that we’ve had our moments,” Parker says, and his voice is quiet as he gently puts his hand on mine, “but I’m just trying to help you, kiddo.”
My eyes find his icy blue ones, hidden under the most beautiful lashes, and my heart skips. I want to pull my hand away, but I can’t. There is something about his touch, something soothing and familiar. Without thinking, I run my hand up the length of his arm, taking a step towards him and allowing myself to get closer. Everything stills and I know my brain is no longer in control of my action, this is all my heart.

Our stomachs touch and I’m so close that I’m able to breathe in the familiar scent of him. I search his face, looking for some sort of insight. What is he thinking?

With another step, I place my left hand on his chest. He looks at me, unsure of himself. Not something I see on Parker often.

Before he can argue I throw myself at him, my arms wrap around his waist and I place my head on his shoulder.
Every muscle in his body goes lax as I hug him. “Jesus, Katie, I’ve missed you,” he whispers running his hand through my dark blonde hair. “I just want to hear your voice.”
I want to believe him but I can’t. Parker McKenzie has always been full of it. Back when I knew him—really knew him—he’d say and do anything to get what he wanted. Everything was always a conquest for him, just like I had been…and probably still am.

Hands rest on either side of my face, and Parker gently lifts my gaze to his. I want to hate him. I want to push him away from me. But I can’t. I’m frozen, under the control of emotions that have been buried away for years. With the realization that he still has a hold on my heart, the guilt washes over me. My stomach churns and I start to pull away from him.
As if sensing my change in mood, he tightens his grip on my wrists and pulls me back in. He thumbs my bracelet, reminding me of the depth of our relationship. There are so many layers to Katie and Parker. Layers that no one will truly ever uncover.

“I know I treated you like shit, and I know that I don’t deserve for you to give me a chance, but you’ve gotta know that the minute you left town seven years ago, I knew I’d made a mistake. I know you know it too. You and I were the only thing that ever made sense to me, Katie.”
Emotions begin to stir inside of me. His eyes burn down on mine. I struggle to organize my thoughts, wondering what my next move will be. We’ve never talked about that day, and I want to know why.

I consider my options. Do I start my healing by figuring out my past? I just want to know why things ended up the way they did. I want to make sense of this crazy thing called my life.
“What the hell’s going on here?” Tommy’s voice bellows through the stable.
Just like two gawky teenagers getting caught for the first time, we break our embrace. I look up to see Tommy stalking angrily down the narrow walkway of the barn.
“She’s my family too, Tommy,” Parker calls out. “I have a right to hug her if I want.”
Before I know it, Tommy’s chest is bumping with Parker’s. They’re standing face to face, their noses practically touching. The tension in the stable has just increased tenfold.
“She’s been through enough without you fucking with her head again, Parker!”

“I’m not fucking with her.” Parker pushes Tommy away with his hands. Tommy clenches his fists and I can tell he’s doing his best to control his anger. A nervous ball of energy rests in my stomach and I watch helplessly as Parker exits the stall and walks out of the barn. “I’m helping her,” he calls over his shoulder. “You would understand that if you knew anything about your sister.” And with those parting words he leaves Tommy and I alone with nothing but our silent thoughts.

~ Excerpt ~
Prologue

The bedroom door creaked open as it had almost every night since I could remember. He always came for the same person—Loren. I hated him, despised him really. That night, like every other night, I didn’t want her to go. My big sister was all I had. My mother and father had died a long time ago.
Lo,” I cried. “Please don’t leave. Please.” I heard her kick off her sheets before she rustled out of her bed. I’d never had the courage to look at him standing at the door waiting for her, but I knew he was there, with his greasy hair and his beer belly hanging low over the waistband of his boxer shorts.
Loren ran to my bed and knelt down next to me. “Shh. It’s okay, Brae. I won’t be long. I promise. Close your eyes like a good girl, all right?”
I turned to face her, tears moistening my eyes. She planted a soft kiss on my forehead. “I promise when I come back I’ll lie with you, okay?” I nodded.
It was dark outside, but dawn was coming. Only a few short hours before the light chased away the darkness and all the misery that accompanied it. The sound of crickets chirping outside our bedroom window punctuated the silence inside our small, two-bedroom house. The music coming from their wings should have helped calm me, but it only served as the eerie background track to our recurring nightmare.
I held back my tears, but couldn’t give up without a fight. “But, Loren—”
Shut her up before your aunt wakes,” the horrible man said. Bile rose in my throat at the sound of his voice.
An eight-year-old shouldn’t know what rape is, or what true hatred feels like, but I hated that man, hated him with every breath I took.
Loren continued rubbing my hair as she spoke. “Brae, listen to me. This will be over soon … for both of us.” She reached for my hand and squeezed it tightly. “I promise. Please, just be quiet.”
I closed my eyes and rolled over to face the yellowing drywall that had never been painted. Loren’s footsteps softly tapped against the wood floor as she headed out of the bedroom.
What was that all about?” he asked gruffly.
The thin walls allowed their conversation to flow freely throughout the house, but my aunt Tara never heard them. Her alcohol-induced coma helped her sleep through the horror that occurred every night right under her nose.
Nothing,” Loren responded. “Let’s just get this over with.”
His voice was cold when he spoke again. “I don’t appreciate your mouth. Maybe I should take her to the basement with me instead. She knows better than to talk back to her uncle.”
I shut my eyes tighter. I never wanted to be near him, especially not alone in the basement.
She’s been through enough. You will not take advantage of her,” Loren said just before I heard the signature creak of the basement door.
My eyes snapped open at the sound of a hand slapping against flesh. “I will have her one day and there is nothing you can do about it. Now get your ass down there.”
The basement door shut, muffling any further conversation between them. Tears streamed from my eyes as fear consumed me, and I shoved my face into my pillow to mask my sobs.

***
I was three when it happened. I didn’t have any memory of it, but Loren had told me the story over and over again. It was a head-on collision. My parents both died on impact, but paramedics ripped me out of the car without a scratch on my body. Loren had been at her dance rehearsal at the time. After the accident, the court gave custody to our aunt Tara and her horrible husband Henry.
The night Henry first expressed interest in me was the night Loren decided she’d had enough. In the following months leading to her eighteenth birthday, Loren found different ways to barricade our bedroom door, though she always paid for it the next day with extra chores and beatings.
But she never complained.
I know she did it for us … for me.
When Loren turned eighteen she filed a restraining order against Henry and told our aunt Tara what had been happening in her home while she was asleep. Aunt Tara refused to believe anything Loren told her, but she agreed to sign over guardianship rights of me to Loren if Loren agreed not to pursue any legal action against her husband. That was after she kicked us out of her house.
It was a blessing in disguise.
Loren applied for a housekeeping job for a couple in Newport, Rhode Island. As soon as things were settled with our aunt, we left Nampa, Idaho, and headed east until we reached the opposite side of the country. We drove cross-country with only pennies to our names, but Henry wouldn’t ever touch Loren or me again.
It was a welcome fresh start.
Loren inherited half of our parents’ wealth on her eighteenth birthday. Unfortunately, Tara and Henry never moved the money into an interest-bearing account, so we only had a few thousand dollars to help us in Rhode Island, but it was enough to start our lives over in a new city.
It’s just you and me, Brae,” Loren said as she looked at me through the rearview mirror. “I promise you, baby girl, I’ll do whatever I can to protect you.”
I smiled as I hugged my dolly, the last gift my mother had given me before she died. “I love you, Lo,” I said before I looked out the car window. My eyes filled with tears, of happiness this time. Never again would Henry hurt either one of us.
“I love you too,” she replied. Then she started the car and drove us toward our new life.

EXCERPT:

As I approach his house, I see his Jeep parked in the drive, the hood up, and a tight, jean-clad ass bent over the side. Okay, he’s definitely home. I tentatively wander around the other side of the Jeep and lean against the side, looking at the engine. He hasn’t noticed that I’m here yet, and I’m not even sure how he’ll react to seeing me here, but I can’t seem to stay away. His dark head is bent low, his arms buried in the engine, tinkering with something. His arms are bare as he’s pulled off his T-shirt, which is draped over the windshield. A thin sheen of sweat covers his shoulders and back, and his entire sleeve tattoo, which runs from just above his wrist all the way up to the top of his right shoulder, is on full display, making my girlie parts all tingle and come to life. Holy Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. He’s so fucking toned it’s crazy. Jeez, his muscles bunch and stretch as he pulls on the wrench in his hand. “Come on, you motherfucker,” he mutters. I have to bite my lips to keep from laughing out loud. “So, what seems to be the problem?” I finally ask when he doesn’t notice me, keeping my eyes trained on the engine when his head whips up to look at me. I slowly lift my eyes to his and grin. “I didn’t hear your car,” he murmurs with a smile. “I walked.” I shrug and look back down into the bowels of his Jeep. “What’s wrong with your car?” “You walked from your house?” he asks incredulously. “No.” I shake my head and chuckle. “From Sips. I had coffee with Cara this morning.” He stands up straight and leans his palms on the side of the Jeep, watching me. My eyes immediately fall to one drop of sweat slowly making its way down his hard chest. “You had coffee with Cara?” He smiles. “Yeah.” I shrug shyly. “I’m sorry to just stop by like this. I was out for a walk and just sort of found myself here.” I feel my cheeks heat and I back away, but he shakes his head and smiles widely. “I’m glad you came by.” He raises his brows as I continue to stare. I shake my head and raise my eyes to his, then bust out laughing. “Why are you laughing?” he asks with a wide grin. “Because I don’t think I’ve ever seen you without a shirt. I didn’t realize the tats went all the way up your arm. Who would have thought that under it all you’re just a bad boy?” His eyes flash with heat as he narrows them on my face, watching me. He pulls a rag out of his back pocket and begins wiping off his hands, but his gray eyes stay on mine. Did I offend him? “I’m not such a bad boy. Looks can be deceiving, Lauren.” He smirks as he lowers the hood on his Jeep. “But from the look of you right now, you don’t seem to mind the tats.” “I don’t mind.” I shrug nonchalantly and try to ignore the way my heart picks up speed as he slowly saunters around the hood of the vehicle. “Do you have any tats?” “Yeah.” His eyes widen in surprise and then rake over me from head to toe. “Where?” I grin, enjoying this flirtatious banter. “Here and there.” “I have ways of making people talk, you know.” “Bright lights and rubber hoses?” I ask with a raised brow. He tosses his head back and laughs, an all-out belly laugh. “I’m not a cop,” he smirks. “You might get to see them. Someday.” He closes the gap between us and kisses me gently on the forehead, not touching me anywhere else. “I hope someday comes sooner rather than later,” he whispers before pulling back and smiling softly down at me. “I would hug you, but I’m dirty.” I wave him off, as if it’s no biggie, although I don’t mind so much that he’s a bit dirty and sweaty. “What were you doing?” I gesture to the car. “Changing the oil.” “There are places you can go,” I inform him with a perfectly straight face, “where you pull into this big garage, and then you leave your car and go into this small room with five-year-old magazines and stale coffee, and the people there will change your oil for you.” “Or, smart-ass, I can do it myself in my own driveway.” “Suit yourself.” I shrug. “Did you sleep okay on the couch?” he asks, changing the subject. “Yeah, actually, I did. But I could always sleep just about anywhere.” “Hence the chaise in your office.” He chuckles. I nod and stuff my hands in my pockets. “I’m sorry that I interrupted your morning. I was just out for a walk and found myself here.” “I’m glad you did.” He scratches his stomach, and my eyes follow the movement. His abs are just delicious. For being so dark haired, he has little hair on his chest and stomach, but a light trail of hair falls from his navel and disappears into his jeans. He’s also sporting a V in the muscles on his hips that the heroes in my novels would covet. “Lo?” he asks with a wide grin. “Yeah?” I drag my eyes up to his again. “I lost you for a second.” I blink rapidly and feel heat fill my cheeks. Jesus, get a grip! You’ve seen hot men before, Lauren. “Sorry, my mind wandered.”

~ Review ~
4 Stars

I have really been looking forward to this book.  I couldn't wait to get more of Ty, Lauren, Josh, Cara, Jill and Zach.

Lauren is still struggling with her divorce.  She wants to get rid of her ex, but he won't leave her alone.  She has an issue with trust, but She has known Ty for years. Can she trust him?  She isn't looking for a relationship.  She thought she found the man of her dreams and he turned out to be a douche.  She wants Ty and tries to fight it, but she can't. Will she give him her heart? Or will it just be a fling?

Ty wants Lauren and he is willing to wait for her to realize that he is worth a chance.  He doesn't believe all the trouble her ex is causing her.  He is determined to protect her at all costs.  He has a habit of being over protective to the people he loves.  Will he scare her away with his protectivenss?  Or will he finally get the girl?

This book wasn't what I was expecting.  I was looking for more.  I felt that the story line was amazing, but there was almost too much sex.  It distracted from the story.

“Lex, I love you,” he whispered.

I sucked in a breath of air and fought like hell to keep the tears from falling. It wasn’t the first time he’d ever said it to me, but this time, it felt so…different. A tear fell, and he quickly brushed it away with his lips as he let out a low, soft moan.

“You have no idea how hard it is for me not to make love to you every time I’m with you. I want nothing more than to be with you, but I want it to be right. I want it to be perfect for you. I don’t want us to sneak into a barn or do it in a car. You deserve so much more than that, sweetheart. I want to make you feel special the first time we make love.”

Wow. Oh…just wow. My breaths were coming out faster. I looked at his lips as I licked mine.

He closed his eyes. “You drive me mad with desire, Alexandra. You have to know that.”

Oh dear God…I think I might have an orgasm…right now…right here.

When he opened his eyes, they were filled with something I’d never seen before. The intense feeling of need I had for him grew about a hundred times.  I tried to talk, but only a whisper came out, “Will…”

When his lips touched mine, I let out a moan. I opened my mouth to him so that our tongues could explore each other like they had done a hundred times before. I brought my hands up and ran them through his hair. When he pushed himself into me, I felt his hard-on, and I wanted to wrap my legs around him so badly.

The kiss started to become passionate…until I heard someone clear his throat. I snapped my eyes open right as Will pulled back and scrunched up his face.

“Shit,” he whispered so that only I could hear.

He took a few steps away from me as he ran his hand through his hair.
Lord, help me.

I wanted this boy, and even though I knew we had just been caught making out in my father’s barn, my desire for him was so intense that I wanted to cry. I never took my eyes off of him.

He winked at me before turning to the side. “Dad, Gunner, um…I mean, Mr. Mathews…um…I mean, sir…”

I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath. Oh…holy…hell. My father just caught me making out in his barn.

I tried to compose myself as I pushed off the wall and turned to face my father and Will’s father, Josh. I wanted to giggle over Will struggling on how to address my father, but when I looked into my dad’s eyes, I knew that wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do.

“So…” Josh started to say as he shook his head and smiled at Will.

“Damn, boy…you picked the wrong girl to get caught making out with in her daddy’s barn.”

I quickly glanced over at Will, who looked at my father and then back at his dad. He smiled slightly, but then he looked back at my father and swallowed hard.

Dragging in a deep breath, my father looked at us. “Alex, Will…I think y’all need to head on up to the house and wait for us on the back porch.”

Will and I looked at each other, and at the same time, we said, “Yes, sir.”

As we walked out of the barn, Will grabbed my hand right in front of my father.

Will looked at me, winked, and whispered, “I think that went well.”

I just looked at him with my mouth hanging open. “You must have a death wish.”
